Stop the Skyway Resort!(Click here for Facebook page) Representatives from Turtle Watch, Audubon and Sierra Club met Sept 23 to continue organizing opposition to the Sunshine Skyway Resort. Developers have promised revisions for permitting this fall. Original plans called for a massive dredge and fill operation squarely in the center of the Terra Ceia Aquatic Preserve and construction of a tourist attraction with captive marine mammals, including prisoner dolphins. Concerned citizens, environmentalists and fishermen are braced for a fight to stop this destructive project and protect the surrounding marine habitat. The pristine Terra Ceia Aquatic Preserve provides some of the best fishing in Tampa Bay and is home to countless birds, juvenile sea turtles, manatee, dolphins, etc. Opposition this project has linked diverse groups who share a common interest in protecting Terra Ceia. A petition drive demanding State funding of the purchase of Rattlesnake Key by Florida Forever is underway. Purchase by the State will effectively end the threat of development in the Aquatic Preserve.A “Stop the Skyway Resort Project” Facebook is established and a website will be going up soon.
