Alafia River Paddle April 6, 2008 There were 15 of us and we took about a 4 hour paddle covering 8 1/2 miles with a half an hour stop over for lunch. The river is twisty and winding in some places, has high banks and almost no development along the way. The weather really held out for us-only a sprinkle a couple of times. Skies were overcast so that made for a very pleasant mild weathered outing. We did go over some rapids but since the water level was up more than usual we only went over a couple. From what I understand there are usually 12 areas with rapids. The current going down stream is very strong and you could probably do the whole paddle without putting your paddle in the water. We saw a couple alligators and water mocasins-one tried to get into one of the kayaks. A great day on the river. photos and journal courtesy of Sue Bunge |
