About our Outings:

Blue Winged Teal We suggest a $5 donation for our outings; however, prices may vary. Please reserve early with the outing leaders!

 

All participants will be asked to sign a liability waiver. Read a copy of the waiver before the outing.  Overnight camping trips also require campsite and parking fees and an additional donation of at least $5.

DeerPrairie Walk
Saturday June 28,  8 a m. Deer Prairie 5 mile (allow 3 hrs) walk. Wear sturdy shoes, carry water and bring lunch if your time allows. Reserve with Sally 941-484-4113

Sleeping Turtles Walk
Saturday, July 26, 7:30 a m. Join fellow Sierrans for a 4-mile walk (two hours) at Sleeping Turtles Preserve. Wear sturdy, wettable shoes, and sunscreen, and bring plenty of water and lunch, if your time allows. Reserve with Sally at 941-484-4113.

Annual Turtle Walk
Sunday, July 27, 6:30 a.m., Start your day off with an early-morning beach walk (about 1.5 miles) with volunteers from the Longboat Key Turtle Watch. Learn how the volunteers—in an effort to protect the threatened and endangered sea turtles—conduct daily patrols to determine sea turtles’ nesting and hatching activity of the night before. There will be an optional post-walk breakfast at Blue Dolphin on Longboat Key. Meet at the Longboat Observer parking lot, 5570 Gulf of Mexico Drive. Reserve with Freda by July 25. Call 941-383-6261.

Pithachascotee River paddle
Sunday, Aug 3. Paddle up river from Sim’s Parkas as far as is
navigable and back, with lunch along the way. This is the natural,
uninhabited section of the river, and we will see what natural beauty
and wildlife we can find along this nice 6-mile paddle. Reserve with

Sunset Walk
Sunday, Aug 10, 5:30 p.m. Walk Treasure Island Beach to John’s
Pass and back to watch the sunset; 3 miles round trip; famous
Drum Circle included. Come along and meet new friends as
well as shore birds and the other critters we may find along
the beach. Bring a chair/food for drum circle (till 10 p.m.).
Meet at the beachside parking lot restrooms at 104 Avenue and
Gulf Boulevard at Treasure Island. Reserve with Pat Kiesylis

Joan M. Durante Park Walk
Saturday, Aug. 16, 8 a.m, 1.5 mile (allow 60-90 minutes) walk in
Joan M. Durante Park on Longboat Key. A slow walk through the
wetland and coastal dunes of this beautiful park, with wonderful
views of Sarasota Bay. Wear sturdy shoes, bring hat, water and

Leffis Key Potluck and Exploring
Saturday, Aug. 16, 5:30 p.m. Potluck dinner and explore Leffis
Key Habitat Restoration Project. Bring a dish to share, your table
service, drink, bug protection and donation. After we eat, we will
walk to Leffi s Key (Coquina Beach Bayside on S. Anna Maria Island)
and search for wildlife, check out the growth of the habitat
and watch for a view of the full moon rising. Reserve with Mary

Moonlight Walk Casperson Beach
Saturday, Aug. 16, 8 p m. if weather permits. If it rains: Change
to Sunday, Aug. 17, 7 a m.; 4-mile beach walk with swim. Must
wear sturdy shoes, bring water, sunscreen, insect repellent. Reserve

Shell Key Paddle
Sunday, Aug 24. An easy trip for beginners. Join us for a kayak
paddle to discover the beaches on Shell Key. We’ll look for and
study shells, dolphins, birds and any other wildlife we can find.

Woolverton Trail Kayak
Sunday Aug. 24, 9 a.m. A great trail to paddle, with over a mile of
mangrove trails, scenic island and bay paddling; lunch and swim
on an island sandy beach. About an hour’s drive from Sarasota
to Gasparilla Sound. Rentals are available. Reserve with Don

Venetian Parkway Walk/Swim-Casperson Beach
Saturday, Aug. 30, 7 a.m. 4 miles; must wear sturdy shoes,
bring water, sunscreen, breakfast snack. Reserve with Sally at

Sierra Club’s Clair Tappaan Lodge in California
Sept. 14-19, Clair Tappaan Lodge, Sierra Nevada Range in California, near Lake Tahoe. Sierra Club volunteers built the lodge back in the 1930s for us Sierrans to enjoy. For the six days five nights with room, board and trail guide the price will be around $500. Our hikes start at 7,000 feet elevation. We’ll hike each day for 3 to 5 hours at a moderate pace with breaks to view the flowers and trees, incredible mountain vistas and have lunch at the peak. The lodge provides family style meals, trail guides, library and bunk style sleeping (bring your own bedding). The size of our group is limited, so get your reservations in early.
