Land Acquisition
Sierra Works to Put Environmentally Sensitive Land in Public Ownership

Acquisition of environmentally sensitive lands is the most effective way to preserve biodiversity and protect natural resources for future generations. The Polk Group has been instrumental in the listing and acquisition of environmental lands in our region through the Water Management District's Save Our Rivers Program and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Florida Forever Program - successor to the Preservation 2000 Program.

Polk Sierrans, working closely with local environmental, sportsman and civic groups, created a remarkable grassroots movement that culminated in the passage of the landmark 1994 voter referendum that created and funded the Polk County Environmental Lands Program. By levying a special property tax, the county could raise more than $20 million over the next 20 years, exclusively for the purpose of buying environmentally senstitive land in Polk County. Today, several Sierra Club members proudly serve on the board that oversees this highly successful and enormously popular county program.
