Coffeen Nature Preserve: A Sierra Club Treasure
By Robert W. Hastings, Conservation Chair, Alabama Chapter |
 |
The Coffeen Nature Preserve,on the Gulf beach in Walton County, Florida, is a unique treasure, with special ties to the Sierra Club. The Preserve was owned and managed after its creation in 1976 by the Sierra Club Foundation, but was transferred to a newly formed Coffeen Land Trust on July 23, 2004. It has been the site of many Sierra Club meetings, and work parties of Sierra Club members have assisted with its maintenance over the years. The Preserve is located in the Panhandle of Florida, near the western edge of Walton County. With its community of traditional single familyGulf beach homes called Four Mile Village, the Preserve stands in sharp contrast to the surrounding urban sprawl of northwest Florida.
