St. Augustine Beach signs up for Cool Cities

Nov 20, 2007

St. Augustine Beach has made the commitment! Let's make all of Northeast Florida Cool. It’s time for citizen action. We need you to join in the campaign to help our local cities and counties to get green. Across Northeast Florida, we are forming Cool Cities campaign teams to help our mayors to undertake the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement.

St. Augustine and St. Augustine Beach cities were asked by local residents and Sierra Club members Gina Burrell and Robin Nadeau to undertake the Cool Cities pledge. Model resolutions were presented to the two city commissions to direct their mayors to sign on. St. Augustine Beach has made the commitment!

Sierra Club members in St. Johns County will present our planned approach to the County Commissioners, so St. Johns can be a Cool County. Join the movement! St. Augustine, Orange Park, Penney Farms, Green Cove Springs and Clay—let your voices be heard, too!

The City of Jacksonville is ready for dialogue (following Mayor John Peyton’s midsummer commitment). Volunteers will help with various tasks supporting a Greenhouse Gas Inventory, to help with public education (business and citizen communications) and to help guide public policy directions for the city. Sierra members Janet Stanko and Jennifer McCharen, along with Phillip Ramsey and the Jacksonville Carbon Neutral Initiative, are helping to keep open dialogue with JEA and the city.

We need more players on the field. We’re not talking technical stuff. This stuff is easy to learn and is based on common sense.

Soon the State of Florida will be getting down to brass tacks regarding energy and climate protection policy. The Governor’s Action Team and the Florida Energy Commission both are preparing policy papers due out in the next couple months. Several Sierra members have been and are active in this effort across the state. Believe me, it’s not too late to get involved.

Please call Tom Larson at 904-247-1876 or send a message to Tom.Larson@Florida.SierraClub.org to inquire about and to join the Cool Cities Campaign. It's a lot of fun and it's good for your environment.
