Ponte Vedra Monthly Meeting - William Bartram Scenic Highway
Aug 21, 2012
Al Abbatiello, Chairman of the William Bartram Scenic and Historic Highway Management Council, will give a presentation about the William Bartram Scenic and Historic Highway. He will show an award winning video, “UP FROM THE ROOTS – Remembering Rural St. Johns County” wherein a few long term residents relate their stories of growing up in the county.
The highway originated in 1980 when local citizens protected two centuries-old oak trees on State Road 13 from destruction by FDOT and the State of Florida.
After years of hard work SR13 was officially designated as a Florida Scenic Highway in 2006. A large grant was received in 2006 from the Federal Highway Administration, Florida, and St. Johns County to develop a master plan to continue the mission to protect and preserve intrinsic resources existing along SR 13.
The Master Plan is complete and a website developed (See http://bartramscenichighway.com/). Oral histories of 34 long term SR13 residents were compiled and have been donated to various libraries. Also, a newsletter and a new membership brochure are available.
Everyone is welcome! Snacks will be provided, but bring your own drink.
