Tour of Little St. Simons Island, Georgia

Mar 10, 2012
10:15 a.m.

Little St. Simons is a private island resort that has won national recognition. Plan to arrive by 10:15 a.m. at the Hampton River Marina on St. Simons Island for a 15-minute boat ride departing at 10:30 for the island. We will start with a naturalist-led 1.5 hour tour of the island, sitting on bench seats in the back of an open truck. The resort grows some of its own organic food; we’ll enjoy a hot lunch in the lodge’s rustic dining room. In the afternoon, we can walk for miles along the beach. We depart at 4 p.m. by boat.

Cost: $75 per person. Limit of 18 participants. Reservations close March 3. Reserve directly with the resort: www.LittleSSI.com or call: (888) 733-5774. Refunds are available up to 72 hours before the trip.

The resort noted that the boat ramp is very steep at low tide, and the truck tour is “bouncy” and may not be advisable for those with back or hip problems. A loose fitting, long-sleeved shirt and long pants are suggested in case of bugs.

Contact June at mirandamanning@aol.com if you would like to carpool/caravan from Publix on Town Center Parkway (St. Johns Town Center) off 9A, north of JTB. Carpool would depart at 8:15 a.m.. Estimated driving time from Jacksonville Airport is 1 hour 30 minutes.
