Fort Matanzas and Washington Oaks State Gardens

Visit the National Monument and take the free ferry to visit the actual Fort. Walk the ½ mile boardwalk through a maritime forest. Visit the beach which the National Park Service has closed to beach driving to protect endangered birds. Then visit nearby Washington Oaks State Gardens and walk the .7mile Mala Compra trail. Enjoy views of the Matanzas River.
Children are very welcome. No pets please. Please bring lunch, water, suntan lotion and insect repellent. The entrance to the Monument is free but there is a $5 per car entrance fee to the State Gardens. There is no need to reserve a place on the outing.
For carpoolers in Jacksonville please contact one another on Meetup or meet at the Avenues Mall in front of Mens Belk the upper level of the Mall at 8:30 a.m. (Leader Brian Paradise will not be at this site.)
For carpoolers from the beaches, please meet Brian at the Ponte Vedra Beach Public Library at 8:30 a.m.

To drive directly to Fort Matanzas: south on I-95 and take exit 305 (Route 206) and follow this six miles to A1A. Turn right (south) and follow A1A for four miles to the Monument entrance on the right side of the road and meet the rest of the Sierra group in the parking lot at 10:00 a.m.
