General Program, Ponte Vedra: Old West Lives On
Oct 12, 2009
Gabe Hanson will present a photographic journey through the Old West. The photos highlight the people, activities and landscapes in the area of Northeast New Mexico, stretching from the Sangre de Cristo mountain range just East of Santa Fe, and East for about 100 miles out onto the high plains, ranch country. With a side trip South into Lincoln County, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid country, and into a little-known area of SW Colorado, affording a window into the past. Some of the photos raise environmental issues of interest to fellow Sierrans.
Gabe was in his late twenties when he got heavily involved in photography, which enabled him to spend more time in the great outdoors. In Mexico, he made himself into a photographer, while he was a visiting research fellow at the College of Mexico for about fourteen months. On weekends he'd head out of town to take advantage of the great photo opportunities available within fifty miles in any direction. In 2002, he participated in a workshop with Reid Callanan, the head of Santa Fe Photographic Workshops. He then became a semi-pro photographer. His biggest paid gig so far was as official photographer for the triennial meeting of the Old Santa Fe Trail Association.
