Program: Community Gardens
Jun 9, 2008
6:30 p.m. social time
7:00 p.m. program
One of the three Sierra Club national Conservation Initiatives agreed on during the Sierra Summit in 2005 was Safe and Healthy Communities. Community gardens have proven to be a vital part of this Initiative. Community gardens do not incur the costs of transportation to market and do not have to rely on oil- based pesticides which are also increasing the cost of food production.
Mary Puckett, with the Duval County Agricultural Extension Urban Gardening program, will tell us how to get involved in starting a community garden. For those who can't take advantage of that experience, she will give us tips on container gardening in small spaces.
We will also hear from folks who are starting community gardens in their neighborhoods and how they are going. Jennifer McCharen, with the Springfield Garden, and Jonathan Felts from the Beaches Community Garden, will speak to us.
