Welcome to the Sierra Club!

The Sierra Club is a national organization dedicated to explore, enjoy, and protect the planet. Our local Northeast Florida Group organizes and participates in outdoor adventures, environmental education, and lobbies our local and state government for pro-environmental policy and legislation.

Twice a month, our group conducts meetings in Jacksonville and Ponte Vedra Beach. Speakers discuss diverse subjects such as snake and insect bites, the importance of barrier islands, manatee habitat, creating walkable communities, encroaching urban sprawl, and so on.

We hope you enjoy surfing our site.  Meet Sierra Club members online at www.meetup.com/Sierra-Club-Northeast-Florida-Group, please feel free to come to one of our meetings, or join us on an outing, or visit Sierra Club at an event!

Gerrymandering, the deliberate rearrangement of the boundaries of congressional districts to influence the outcome of elections, is rampant in Florida.  An effort is underway to amend the Florida Constitution to stop legislators from choosing their own voters and to make sure that political districts are contiguous and more compact. For more info, including wacky congressional district maps view this pdf file:  Fair Districts

The original gerrymander was created in 1812 by Massachusetts governor Elbridge Gerry, who crafted a district for political purposes that looked like a salamander.

Wonder about the environmental impact of the 2009 Florida Legislative Session?
