What does the number in the triangle mean? 1 - Polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE) - soda bottles, cosmetic packages 2 - High-Density polyethylene (HDPE) - milk & water jugs, shampoo & detergent bottles 3 - Polyvinyl chloride (PVC or V) - shampoo, cooking oil, liquor & mouthwash bottles 4 - Low-Density polyethylene (LDPE) - squeezable bottles (i.e., cosmetics & toiletries) 5 - Polypropylene (PP) - used for foods that must be packaged hot (i.e., pancake syrup) 6 - Polystyrene (PS) - used to package products not sensitive to oxygen (i.e., tablets, ointments) 7 - Other plastics - includes mixed plastics which can not be recycled Source - "The Green Consumer", Joel Makower, Penguin Books 1993
