Saturday, November 15. Learning about the Civil Rights movement
St. Augustine's great encounter with modern history came in 1964 when Dr. Martin Luther King led demonstrations in the Ancient City that resulted in the passage of the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964. For many decades this important part of history was swept under the rug, but in the past two years, a permanently marked Freedom Trail of historic sites of the civil rights movement has been established, and has gained international publicity. David Nolan, noted author and historian, will be our guide. Mr. Nolan has been committed to the preservation of many St. Augustine landmarks, including the historic area of Lincolnville, founded by freed slaves after the Civil War.
If 20 or more people sign up, we will take a sightseeing train, starting at the Sugar Mill in St. Augustine at the corner of San Marco and route 16. Parking will be available. The cost will be $20.00 each. If not, this will be a walking tour and there will be a fee of $5.00 each. Lunch is optional. The outing will start at 10 a.m. and is expected to finish at about 11.30 a.m.
RSVP by November 8. to Leader Shelly Fine at Humanness1@aol.com or call 904 620-8115.
