VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

It is festival season in South Florida - Don't you love it?

Research shows that helping others and volunteering for a worthy cause contributes to an individual’s sense well-being. The Miami Group offers you many opportunities to enhance your personal and our organizational well-being by volunteering to reach out to the community in events throughout the year. All that is required is your willingness to share with others: why you joined the Sierra Club; what you like about the Sierra Club; places you have been camping; general information about the Miami Group. Basically, you will be an ambassador. There are plenty of opportunities right in your neighborhood, so step up and volunteer today to spend three to four hours. The club appreciates it and you will feel good having volunteered.

Miami Sierra Club Needs a Festivals Chair
Are you good at organizing? The Festival Chair for the Miami Group needs to be able to organize volunteers to represent The Miami Sierra Club at community festivals and events throughout the year. The Miami Group gets invited to setup a table at a local event to help the community get to know us. We need someone to coordinate who sits at the table and when. We will provide you with a list of members who know the ropes, and some who don't, and a list of past events and coordinators. Please email Maria Papazian, miami-enviroed@florida.sierraclub.org for more info or to volunteer.

A special THANK YOU to those members who have already volunteered: Amy Werba (Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden Fairchild Challenge Middle School Research Poster Contest); Gisela Ullrich, Stephen Mahoney & Jim Gross (Native Plant Day); Debbie Matthews, Cal Acosta and Marta Acosta (rained-out Everglades Awareness Concert); Allen Harris (UM The Green Life); Andres Mejides, Allen Harris, and Joe (Earth Fair at Wild Oats); Mark Oncavage (Miami River Day)Paul Michel and Coky Michel (Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden Fairchild Challenge Senior High Research Project Contest); Mark Oncavage (Baynanza at Morningside Park); Paul Michel, Coky Michel, Dr. Barry Burak, Dr. David Newman, Gisela Ullrich, and Allen Harris (Earth Fest at Biscayne Nature Center); Mark Oncavage (Killian Senior High Earth Day Celebration); Gisela Ullrich, Noel Cleland, Steven Hanshu, Allen Harris, and Sarah Cohn (The 4th annual NBC6/Telemundo 51 Health & Fitness Expo). As you can see, you can volunteer for more than one event; the more the better!

Reporter Needed

The webmaster needs someone to write local conservation stories for the club's web page. You don't have to be a great writer, just some basic skill and a nose for local news. We get our national news from club bulletins, but, internet users want to know what is going on locally, what are the issues in Miami-Dade?, who is fighting for the environment? If you want to volunteer, e-mail Miami-Webmaster@florida.sierraclub.org with your story. The usual rules of newspaper reporting hold - no stealing and no defamation of character - and the editor reserves the right to edit. Sample issues: water conservation, energy conservation, parks and recreation, wildlife.

The Sierra Club Miami Group Needs Leaders. Do you think we could be doing a better job, or should be doing things differently? Be a Board Member or Board assistant! If you are interested in helping us keep the club going please e-mail Debbie Mathews You can make a difference!

The Sierra Club Miami Group Needs Help Attracting New Members. If you have some time to help out our Membership Chair or maybe have new ideas for speakers for our general meetings, or want to volunteer but don't know where? Please e-mail our membership chair, Ken Smith or call 305-758-3121
