Miami Sierra Outings is a program of the Sierra Club that is staffed exclusively by volunteers. The primary goals of the outings program are environmental awareness, an appreciation for our wilderness areas and just plain having fun in a natural setting.

Miami Outing Leaders are Sierra Club members who are avid naturalist and are eager to share their knowledge. We conduct day trips to local nature sites and we also conduct overnight camping trips on weekends during the cooler months of the year.

Day Hikes: One day hikes within a 100 miles radius of Miami are scheduled throughout the year. The more popular destinations include the Anhinga and Gumbo Limbo trails in the Florida Everglades, Arch Creek and Oleta River State parks, Biscayne Nature Center and Biscayne National Park. These trips are great for discovering local nature stops, understanding the effects man has on the local environment, and for meeting people who share a love of the natural settings of South Florida.

Biking: There is always an abundance of wildlife when the Miami Group rides Shark Valley in the Florida Everglades. This wonderful place, with its alligators, beautiful birds and wildlife gives you a peak at the "River of Grass"

Canoeing/Kayaking: There are great rivers and lakes and streams for canoeing or kayaking in South Florida. We have had trips to Oleta River State Park, the Loxahatchee River, Peace River, Fisheating Creek, Horse Creek, and to Indian Key State Historic Site in the Florida Keys. The group has a beginning canoe class each year and supplies canoes for most trips.

There are no passengers on our trips, only participants. Our outings are listed as Leisure, Moderate, or Strenuous. Be realistic about your physical condition and the degree of challenge you enjoy. Come ready to paddle or hike and share the work. Family trips are open to everyone.

Camping trip fees typically include food, transportation, canoes and campground fees. Trip participants need to furnish their own tents, backpacks, sleeping bags, and personal gear. Because of changing costs, outing fees listed may be changed at the opening of the trip. Once you have made a reservation, we ask that you make a serious commitment to attend the trip. Cancellations are detrimental to our program. Our outings leaders are unpaid volunteers.

If you are interested in a trip, call/email the trip leader and ask for details or come to the signup table at the general meetings.
