30th Birthday Party, 2002

Miami Group Comes of Age.

Where were you in 1971?

Here in Miami, a rag-tag bunch of people thought that putting a jetport
in the Everglades was a very bad idea.
They banded together to fight it, and other destructive plans
for the "swamps" of South Florida.

We celebrated our 30th with a bash at Fairchild Tropical Gardens

The group has successfully fought off two major challenges to our founding concept - that Everglades National Park needs to be a quiet, peaceful, place without an airport. The second challenge occurred in 1996 when Dade County Commission took back the Homestead Air Force Reserve Base and sold it to a developement company for the building of a new airport on a small strip of land between Biscayne National Park and Everglades National Park.
