Paddling
the Loxahatchee
& Exploring the Park Don't miss one of the crowning glories of the Treasure Coast, and Florida's only designated Wild & Scenic River. The Loxahatchee River winds through Jonathan Dickinson State Park, making a fantastic canoe or kayak day trip. Ospreys, vultures, river otters, ibis, great and little blue herons, alligators, mangroves, palms and more make this an unforgettable excursion. The lower part of the river is easy going; upstream from Trapper Nelson's homestead a narrow course and fallen trees make it more of a challenge, but well worth while.
The park has nice camping sites in the beautiful pine scrub lands near the river, and lots of trails, a viewing tower, and a roadside alligator viewing area to keep you busy when you're off the river. Canoes and kayaks are available for rent.
