We'll hike 8 miles on a wilderness trail off a section of the Florida National Scenic Trail, north of Alligator Alley (about 50 min from Downtown Ft. Lauderdale). You will learn the difference a few inches of elevation makes to the local flora, as you trek through cypress forest, hammocks and prairie. Swampwalk and Hike in the Big Cypress National Preserve Addition Lands. Sierra hikes in the beautiful Addition Lands of Big Cypress continue with about 5 - 6 miles of walking through mixed terrain. Depending on how much rainfall we've had, you'll probably get your feet wet. But you'll also have lots of fun experiencing a true wilderness area in Broward's backyard. Rated moderate difficulty. Southwest Florida Birding & Wildlife Festival at Rookery Bay near Naples. At the Rookery there's kayaking, guided walks, a boat trip, plus speakers who cover wildlife from eagles to panthers to wading birds are featured. We'll tent camp at Collier Seminole Fri. and Sat. night. There are many nature walks, including an early morning trip to a marsh area. Previously we saw 16 different species of birds, including Rosette Spoonbills, Ospry, Ducks, Coots, and Herons of all kinds. We could even hear Sand Hill Cranes. Later we saw eagles fighting over nesting sites. (Broward Group)

Hike and Swampwalk in the Seldom Explored Addition Lands South of I-75. This is an area of marshes, sable palm hammocks and of course cypress - one of the most pristine areas remaining in all of South Florida. As in the December hike, water conditions will depend on how wet it's been - but expect to get wet. About 5 - 6 miles. Rated moderate difficulty. (Broward Group)

Outings General Informantion

The Broward Group of the Sierra Club invites you to join our outings to beautiful and interesting natural areas with friendly and mutually supportive people. Most outings are geared for novices: all are open to the public on a space available basis. Outings rating system is as follows: "Easy" includes activities that the average healthy individual can do and which do not require any specific expertise or physical condition. "Moderate" includes activities that require some experience and better than average physical condition. "Strenuous" indicates activities that require both significant, specific outdoor experience and excellent physical condition.

Group size limits are set to preserve the areas we visit and the experience we seek. We follow the minimum impact motto "Take only pictures; leave only footprints". Please note that there are various risks and hazards including severe inclement weather and wild animals, which are inherent in many of the outings and activities we undertake. 

By engaging in Sierra activities, you acknowledge that you have considered such risks and agree to assume personal responsibilities for your own safety and that of any minors with you; and you agree to hold harmless and free from blame the outings leader and Sierra Club, it's officers and members for any accidents, injury or illness which might be sustained from participation in Sierra Club activities. In order to participate on one of the Sierra Club's outings, you will need to sign a liability waiver. While we encourage carpooling, participants should note that outings run from the trailhead or take-out and not from any local meeting place; and neither Sierra Club nor the leader is responsible for transportation to or from the outing.
