Maria Papazian has been a valued member of the Miami Group for more than 20 years. She has spent much of her volunteer time working as head of the Miami Group Education Committee. But in the last several years, Maria has taken up some new projects and added fundraising for our group to her busy schedule.
Maria has kept the group from avoiding fundraising completely by nagging us into caring and doing something. She started by looking for grants and other sources of donations. She made sure we filed the paperwork to get our funds out of Foundation. She has gotten donations for raffles and sold tickets. She has organized garage sales and gotten people to donate items and volunteer to help at the event. She organized silent auctions and plant sales at our general meetings. She has sold calendars and t-shirts.
Most recently, Maria has been the driving force for our high-end fundraising event - our Harvest Moon Dinner and Silent Auction. This is a large event that takes a lot of planning and Maria made it happen again and again.
Maria Papazian is a special person who can work hard and convince others to do the same. She is a leader and an inspiration and derserving of the Sand Dollar Award.

PINE TREE NOMINATION FOR JIM WOODFIN
WE NOMINATE: JIM WOODFIN FROM THE TURTLE COAST GROUP
MEMBER SINCE: 2001

NOMINATED BY: GROUP: TURTLE COAST EXCOM NOMINATION: YES

Jim Woodfin for Pine Tree Award
Jim joined Sierra Club in 2001, came to a few meetings and thought “This is a nice outings and social group, but where are the activists?” Then he thought to himself “If not me, who will do it?” ( I must comment that Jim soon found out that Turtle Coast has a dedicated group of activists which is growing year by year.) So he began attending regularly and even appeared at Flexcom in May of 2002 in order to learn more about the Florida Chapter. When met and greeted at the door, he was asked if he would consider taking the minutes as the Chapter Secretary was ill and unable to attend. He hesitated not one moment but said “I can do that.” And do that he did, in the fastest and most orderly fashion we had ever seen. Saturday’s minutes were ready by Sunday morning! Chapter Chair Greg Kalmbach was in awe. And Jim went on to be the Chapter Secretary for another three years.
Jim agreed to run as a candidate for Turtle Coast Group Excom and was selected Chair in 2002. It is hard to describe all the things he has done in the past two years. He immediately set goals and priorities for our group and kept us on track with that. He took over as web master for our languishing group web site and not only revised and revitalized the entire thing, but he continues to keep it up to the minute. The newsletter, outings, volunteer opportunities and other events are posted on the web before most of us even know about them. Check out our web site at www.turtlecaost.org, He is always there to help label newsletters too.
He comes on many of our outings with his handy little digital camera. For each meeting he prepares a power point presentation with flashing, changing images of folks having fun on outings. All this accompanied by “bump and grind” music. Talk about livening up a meeting! Even though he is no longer Chair of Turtle Coast Group, he continues to do this. His “Matters of Scale” mini-presentations which make various comparisons (for instance: how many gallons of water does it take to produce one pound of beef or one pound of wheat) educated us with well-researched facts. He has brought us into the 21 st Century with his power point presentations.
Although Jim has been a Sierra Club member for only a few years, he jumped in with both feet and has become a very valuable member of our group. All this while also serving as Chapter Secretary. No one is more deserving of the Pine Tree Award that Jim Woodfin.
