Is your community a walkable community?

Learn what makes a community walkable

Dan Burden walkable.orgWalkable communities are social, interactive, sustainable communities. Walking is not discriminatory against the young or the elderly. Small businesses thrive on walk-in customers. It's healthy to walk and much nicer to walk for a purpose or with friends for enjoyment. Not every community can accomodate extended walking. Can you walk to run an errand or stroll with your family to a restaurant near home? Can your children safely walk or bike to school? Or do you have too many hindrances in your neighborhood which make walking unpleasant or unsafe? Take a look around. Are sidewalks available to keep traffic away from walkers? Is the sidewalk safe or broken and missing sections? How long does it take to cross with a traffic signal? Photo courtesy of Dan Burden, pedbikeimages.org
