Sarah Bailey, Champion of the Environment

8, 2007

On June 8, at the annual Jacksonville Mayor's Environmental Awards, the Northeast Florida Sierra Club chose Sarah Bailey as 2007 Champion of the Environment.

Sarah Bailey and Brian ParadiseSarah is known to many people as a persistent and plain-spoken advocate for the environment. Living on her beloved Julington Creek, she has always had the welfare of Julington Creek and its sister creek, Durbin Creek, in her mind and heart. When public sentiment to protect the creeks became strong, Sarah traveled back and forth to Tallahassee to assist in the public acquisition of the property which eventually became the Julington-Durbin Preservation Project.

Throughout the years she has campaigned for good water quality and good development practices along the banks of the creeks and the St. Johns River. She promoted sound growth management as a St. Johns county commissioner and as a representative to the regional planning council.

Over the years Sarah has been a staunch friend to Sierra Club, assisting us in our endeavors and offering her home and ranch for benefit fundraisers. Her decades of work for the environment make her a real champion to us.

Sarah Bailey is congratulated by Brian Paradise of the NE Florida Group
