Florida Congressional Districts

Action needed by 30, 2009

2009 NE FL SenateMany congressional districts are sprawling, with confusing boundaries. Many districts do not generally relate to typical community boundaries, but are drawn selectively among or around neighborhoods so that it takes a specific ZIP-plus 4 address to identify one’s assignments. Many who live in the same town or neighborhood have different legislators; many are confused and have little knowledge of who represents them. There is too often little connection of a legislator to one’s community.

These conditions exist because there are no laws prohibiting these practices. Legislators perpetuate their own power by drawing safe districts for themselves.

Because of these conditions, an effort is underway by FairDistrictsFlorida.org to amend the Florida Constitution to stop legislators from choosing their own voters and to make sure that political districts are contiguous and more compact.

An effort is underway by FairDistrictsFlorida.org to amend the Florida Constitution to stop legislators from choosing their own voters, and to make sure that political districts are contiguous and more compact. FairDistrictsFlorida.org has created two proposed amendments to the Florida Constitution for the 2010 ballot:
                          one for Congressional redistricting
                          one for Florida legislative redistricting
